A perfect Postcrossing postcard for this week – it is very sunny here in Nijmegen – is the one I received of the Pensacola Beach sign in Florida. It is an iconic landmark from the 60s which points the way to the beach bridge to get to the barrier island that is Pensacola Beach. Initially
only meant as sign to “give Pensacola a big town feel”, it developed into a symbol people got really attached to. This became clear when they were discussing what to do with it because it was deteriorated and according to some people, “tacky”. As Laura wrote on the back of the postcard: “When there was talk of taking it down and replacing it with something very different, you would have thought someone was proposing changing our national flag!”
